Argylle Digital Release Date Revealed After One Month In Theaters

Summary

  • Argylle
, directed by Matthew Vaughn, is a fast-paced action thriller starring Bryce Dallas Howard and filled with plot twists.
  • The movie will be available for digital release on March 5 in the U.S. and Canada, with a global release on Apple TV+ to follow.
  • Argylle
boasts a star-studded cast, including Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Argylle is being digitally released only a month after it debuted in theaters. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the action thriller saw an introverted spy novelist, Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), thrust into real-life espionage in a story filled with plot twists and Vaughn’s highly stylized action sequences. It was planned to be the beginning of a larger franchise with various sequels and spinoffs, including the continuation of Elly’s story, the adventures of the eponymous Agent Argylle (Henry Cavill), and a crossover with Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise.

Apple Original Films has now announced that Argylle can be streamed on March 5via premium video-on-demand and electronic sell-through in the U.S. and in Canada. It will stream globally on Apple TV+ at a later date. This follows a similar strategy to Apple Original Films’ other recent theatrical releases, such as Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which became available through video-on-demand before streaming on Apple TV+, although these films were in theaters longer than Argylle before their digital releases.

Argylle’s VOD & Streaming Performance Will Determine If The Franchise Has A Future

Henry Cavill as Agent Argylle in Argylle

Despite a star-studded cast and Vaughn’s ambitious franchise plans, Argylle bombing at the box office and its negative reviews make Vaughn’s plans unlikely to be fully realized. Argylle was made on a reported budget of $200 million and has still not even reached a $100 million gross after a month in theaters. The critical reception didn’t help, with critics frustrated by Argylle wasting its intriguing premise on increasingly convoluted plot twists and a poorly paced narrative.

Argylle
currently holds a 33% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Given its financial and critical woes, Argylle‘s last hope is to perform well through video-on-demand and when it becomes available to stream on Apple TV+. If it is able to garner significant viewership and more of an enthusiastic response via streaming, Argylle may be able to continue its story, perhaps as an Apple TV+ television series or as a direct-to-streaming film instead of another theatrical release. It wouldn’t be the first movie to find streaming success after struggling in theaters.

Vaughn’s plan is for the next film to be Argylle: Book One, focused on the origins of Agent Argylle, and then return to Elly’s story in Argylle 2. If he gets an opportunity to expand the franchise on Apple TV+, it will be intriguing to see how he adapts his vision. If Argylle doesn’t perform well when it streams, it will most likely put an end to the potential of an exciting new spy thriller franchise.
